Spring Foals on the Ground

With the turn to Spring, the first crop of foals is on the ground at Cashelbay Stud. Ballybaun Cashel has produced a colt foal by Fredericksminde Manly, Fredericksminde Mathilda (covered by Cashlebay Cruise) has produced a beautiful filly, Cashelbay Mary (covered by Linsfort Barney) has a colt foal.

The story of the season so far for us has to be that of our twenty-four year-old mare Grey Molly who gave birth to twins on the 17th of April, being thirty-two days overdue. A filly foal and a colt foal were born, at six o’clock in the morning. The colt survived, and was brought back to the stables in a wheelbarrow, to be warmed with heating lamps and hot water bottles and hair dryers for four hours.

Grey Molly was milked for two days before the colt nursed himself, albeit with assistance in standing for two more days. This morning, at 7am, when we went to nurse him, we found to our delight he was standing and suckling by himself. We are very grateful to our neighbours for helping us with his survival. Molly was a star throughout the ordeal, and is rewarded with a thriving foal.

There are two more mares to foal – Ginger Meg (due now), and Cashelbay Clancy (12 months gone) – so we hope to be able to report the birth of fresh healthy foals over the coming days.

We’re sure that they will make smashing stock for a prospective buyer!
